TOP STORY
1️⃣ The Top Story: "A Loophole is Not Leadership"
Chatham-Kent is buzzing this week after reports came out that Mayor Darrin Canniff "hand-picked" seven councillors for a private meeting with the OHL to talk about a massive new arena.
Local resident John K. Cryderman sent an open letter to the Chatham Daily News and the rest of Council, questioning the lack of transparency since several councillors didn't even know the meeting was happening.
Canniff explained that while he wanted everyone to be there, he couldn't invite the whole council without breaking the Municipal Act regarding quorum.
Why it matters?: Transparency shouldn't be a hurdle to get around; it should be the starting point. When the price tag is hundreds of millions of dollars, the "seat at the table" should belong to the taxpayers, not just a hand-picked few.
As one resident put it: "We can't take our kids for a walk without safety concerns, yet we're looking at murals and arenas people can't afford." Many feel a $200+ Million arena is a “want” while safety and affordable living are the needs especially when Chatham-Kent is experiencing a homeless crisis.
Mayor Canniff recently met privately with the OHL and seven "hand-picked" councillors, citing quorum rules for the exclusion of the rest of Council.
