It was rescinded about an hour later with no confirmed touchdown, but Environment Canada had warned of a severe storm moving in from Michigan with wind gusts up to 120 km/h, hail up to ping-pong-ball size, and torrential downpours. Unconfirmed social media reports pointed to possible damage in Wheatley and southern Chatham-Kent.
🎓 Major Story — Local School Boards Bracing for New Ontario Attendance Policy
As roughly 21,900 elementary and secondary students prepare to return to class Tuesday, September 8, both Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) and St. Clair Catholic District School Board are adjusting to a provincially mandated attendance policy. Attendance and participation now count for 15% of the final grade in Grades 9 and 10, and 10% in Grades 11 and 12. Excused absences — bereavement, official school trips, school-organized sports, inclement weather, or approved medical reasons — won't affect a student's mark, but individual principals get final say on things like non-school sports tournaments or extended family vacations. Students who rack up more than two unexcused absences risk losing that entire portion of their grade.
LKDSB CEO Gary Girardi says the ministry-directed change adds a real assessment component to something schools have always valued, and is asking parents to communicate clearly with schools when absences happen. St. Clair Catholic CEO Lisa Demers echoed that, noting the stakes are higher now that marks are directly tied to attendance.
