Chatham-Kent picked up a P.J. Marshall Municipal Innovation Award at this year's Association of Municipalities of Ontario conference, one of the province's top honours for municipal program innovation. The award recognizes Pathways on Park, the municipality's transitional cabin site for people experiencing homelessness.
The 50-unit site has now completed its first year, and the recognition points to real, measurable movement: residents transitioning out of the cabins and into stable, longer-term housing rather than cycling back onto the street. It's the kind of program other municipalities across Ontario are watching closely as they wrestle with the same housing pressures CK has been dealing with.
Homelessness and housing affordability have been front and centre locally for a couple of years now, and it's easy for that conversation to stay stuck in frustration.
📊 Major Story — Chamber of Commerce Pushes for a Coordinated Response to New U.S. Tariffs
The Chatham-Kent Chamber of Commerce is calling for a measured, co-ordinated response after Canada–U.S. trade talks broke down, resulting in the U.S. imposing 50 per cent tariffs on roughly $28 billion worth of Canadian goods. The federal government has responded with dollar-for-dollar countermeasures. The Chamber says it wants to see economic resilience become a real issue in this fall's municipal election, not just a talking point.
For a community with as much manufacturing and agricultural trade tied to the border as Chatham-Kent has, tariffs at that scale aren't an abstract federal story — they touch local suppliers, shipping costs, and ultimately jobs.
