Moving to Chatham-Kent? Start here.
Chatham-Kent is a single-tier municipality of about 100,000 people in southwestern Ontario, stretching from Lake Erie to Lake St. Clair. It's a patchwork of small towns and farm country, anchored by the city of Chatham. Here's what you actually need to know in your first month.
The neighbourhoods (and towns) in plain English
Chatham-Kent is one municipality, but it's really a collection of communities. Each has its own personality.
- Chatham — the largest town and commercial centre. Most jobs, restaurants and services. Downtown is along King Street.
- Wallaceburg — north end, on the Sydenham River. Strong community feel, historic glass-town roots.
- Blenheim — south, close to Lake Erie beaches. Quieter, family-oriented.
- Tilbury — west, halfway to Windsor. Convenient if you commute on the 401.
- Ridgetown — east, home to the University of Guelph's Ridgetown Campus.
- Dresden, Bothwell, Wheatley, Erieau, Thamesville — smaller villages, each with their own character.
Housing & cost of living
Chatham-Kent is meaningfully cheaper than Windsor, London or the GTA. Detached homes in town typically run far below comparable Ontario markets, and you'll find more space for the money. Rents are climbing but still moderate by provincial standards. Property tax is municipal — check the Chatham-Kent municipal site for the current mill rate.
Schools
Public schools fall under the Lambton-Kent District School Board (English public) and the St. Clair Catholic District School Board (English Catholic). French-language education is handled by Conseil scolaire Viamonde and Conseil scolaire catholique Providence. Post-secondary: St. Clair College has a Chatham campus, and the University of Guelph operates the Ridgetown Campus.
Healthcare
The Chatham-Kent Health Alliance runs three hospital sites: Chatham, Wallaceburg and Sydenham (in Wallaceburg). Walk-in clinics are limited — finding a family doctor can take time. Register with Health Care Connect (Ontario's provincial waitlist) as soon as you arrive. For non-urgent advice, call Health811.
Getting around
A car is the default — distances between towns are real. CK Transit runs limited bus service within Chatham and inter-community routes a few times a day. The 401 runs east-west across the municipality, putting Windsor (~45 min) and London (~1 hr) within reach.
Things to do
Lake Erie beaches (Erieau, Rondeau Provincial Park, Mitchell's Bay), the Sydenham and Thames rivers for fishing and paddling, Rondeau's old-growth forest, a busy summer festival schedule, the Capitol Theatre and Kiwanis Theatre for live performance, and a strong junior-hockey scene — the Chatham Maroons play in the GOJHL.
