Morning, CK, and happy Friday. It's been a full week — a provincial award for one of our own programs, the 2026 election field locking into its final shape, and a few stories that stuck with me more than I expected. Here's the week that was, plus everything happening this weekend.
📣 CK Spotlight
35 Home Place — one-floor living, done right
Courtesy of Bridget Blonde, REALTOR®, Nest Realty Inc. Brokerage
Bridget Blonde has a new listing in Chatham built for exactly the kind of homeowner who's tired of stairs and yard work. The main floor works with you — handles and rails right where you need them — with two bedrooms up, a third down, and three full baths including a primary ensuite. The double attached garage means no more scraping windshields in January.
Here's the part worth knowing: the $150/month maintenance fee covers the roof, snow removal, and lawn care, so the two chores most people dread are simply handled. No rear neighbours, a private deck, and a street where neighbours actually gather.
⛽ Gas & ☀️ Weather
Gas: Prices around Chatham are tightly packed at the low end — 156.9¢ at Mobil (664 Grand Ave E) up to 162.9¢ at Esso (410 Queen St) today. Check today's cheapest stations on GasBuddy →
Weather: About as good as it gets for a long weekend. Sunny all day — 15° this morning, climbing to 25° (feels 28°) this afternoon, and staying mainly clear into the evening at 21°. Overnight settles at 16°. If you've got outdoor plans this weekend (and there are plenty below), this is the forecast for it.
🏆 Major Story — Pathways on Park Wins a Provincial Innovation Award
Chatham-Kent picked up a P.J. Marshall Municipal Innovation Award at this year's Association of Municipalities of Ontario conference — one of the province's top honours for municipal program innovation. The award recognizes Pathways on Park, the municipality's transitional cabin site for people experiencing homelessness.
The 50-unit site has now completed its first year, and the recognition points to real, measurable movement: residents transitioning out of the cabins and into stable, longer-term housing rather than cycling back onto the street.
🗳️ Major Story — The 2026 Election Field Is Set, and the Reasons Behind It Are Getting Personal
This week the mayoral race locked in at seven candidates, with April Colby's filing completing the field. Colby has said a personal experience is what prompted her to run. Council-wide, 86 candidates are now competing for a newly restructured 14-seat council — down from the previous setup — meaning new faces are guaranteed almost everywhere regardless of how the vote breaks.
Not everyone is staying in the ring, though. Ward councillor Morena McDonald announced this week she won't seek re-election, and a separate piece this week pointed to a broader pattern: several councillors cited a genuinely negative political climate as a factor in deciding not to run again.
