Waste depots and hours
Rural residents without curbside collection drop off household garbage and recycling free with a Waste Depot permit. Anyone can bring extra garbage to Harwich or Wallaceburg for a fee (debit or credit). All depots are closed on statutory holidays.

Does garbage and recycling pickup change on holidays?
Yes. When a statutory holiday falls on a weekday, there’s no collection that day, and that day’s collection and the rest of the week’s each move one day later, up to Saturday. It affects New Year’s Day, Family Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, the Civic Holiday, Labour Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.
What time should I put my garbage out?
Put your garbage cart at the curb no earlier than 7 pm the night before your collection day and no later than 7 am on collection day.
Can I put garbage bags at the curb in Chatham-Kent?
No. Collection is fully automated, so garbage must be in a compatible wheeled cart with the lid closed flat; loose bags aren’t picked up. The standard cart is 95 gallons (about three large bags), and you can swap it for a 65-gallon cart or a 25-gallon can by calling 519-360-1998 or emailing ckinfo@chatham-kent.ca.
How do I book a bulk item pickup?
Bulk items are collected four times a year in each area. Book at least 7 days ahead through the Recycle Coach app, the Municipality’s website, or by calling 3-1-1 or 519-360-1998. Each home can set out up to three items; appliances, e-waste, tires, renovation materials, and mostly-metal items aren’t accepted.

Where can I take extra garbage in Chatham-Kent?
The Harwich Waste Depot (21633 Communication Road) and the Wallaceburg Waste Depot (505 Water Street) take excess garbage, bulk items, and construction waste for a fee, paid by debit or credit. The privately owned Ridge Landfill on Erieau Road also accepts waste for a fee.
