Morning, CK, and happy Friday. This was a genuinely huge week — a tornado warning, a full water restriction saga from emergency to lifted, and enough news that this issue is running long on purpose. Here's everything.
📣 CK Spotlight
154 Semenyn Avenue, Unit 24, Chatham
Courtesy of Bridget Blonde, REALTOR®, Nest Realty Inc. Brokerage
Bridget Blonde has a new listing in Chatham built for exactly the kind of homeowner who's done with stairs and yard work. This ranch-style end-unit townhouse gives you a little extra light and yard space, plus a double car garage so January mornings don't start with a windshield scraper. Inside, everything you need is on one floor: a bright living room with a gas fireplace and deck access, an eat-in kitchen with plenty of cabinetry, and a primary suite with a walk-in closet and 4-piece ensuite, plus main-floor laundry.
Here's the part worth knowing: the finished basement adds a large family room, a den perfect for a home office, and a third full bathroom — real extra living space, not just storage. And a $100/month association fee covers snow removal and lawn care, so two of the biggest homeownership chores are simply handled.
⛽ Gas & ☀️ Weather
Gas: Prices around Chatham range from 168.4¢ at Mobil (701 St Clair St) up to 179.7¢ today. Check today's cheapest stations on GasBuddy →
Weather: Another unsettled day. Morning starts mild at 19° (feels 21°) with a 60% chance of rain and thunderstorm risk. Afternoon warms to 25° but feels like 35°, with an 80% chance of rain (5-10mm) and continued thunderstorm risk. Evening cools slightly to 24° (feels 32°), still a thunderstorm risk. Overnight settles at 20° with a 30% chance of showers.
🌪️ Major Story — Tornado Warning Issued and Lifted for Chatham-Kent
An emergency alert went out around 4:30 PM on Thursday, encouraging people across Chatham-Kent to find shelter. It was rescinded about an hour later with no confirmed touchdown, but Environment Canada had warned of a severe storm moving in from Michigan with wind gusts up to 120 km/h, hail up to ping-pong-ball size, and torrential downpours. Unconfirmed social media reports pointed to possible damage in Wheatley and southern Chatham-Kent.
🎓 Major Story — Local School Boards Bracing for New Ontario Attendance Policy
As roughly 21,900 elementary and secondary students prepare to return to class Tuesday, September 8, both Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) and St. Clair Catholic District School Board are adjusting to a provincially mandated attendance policy. Attendance and participation now count for 15% of the final grade in Grades 9 and 10, and 10% in Grades 11 and 12. Excused absences — bereavement, official school trips, school-organized sports, inclement weather, or approved medical reasons — won't affect a student's mark, but individual principals get final say on things like non-school sports tournaments or extended family vacations. Students who rack up more than two unexcused absences risk losing that entire portion of their grade.
LKDSB CEO Gary Girardi says the ministry-directed change adds a real assessment component to something schools have always valued, and is asking parents to communicate clearly with schools when absences happen. St. Clair Catholic CEO Lisa Demers echoed that, noting the stakes are higher now that marks are directly tied to attendance.
Why it matters to CK: This isn't a minor policy tweak — it's a real, mark-affecting change for every Grade 9-12 student across both boards, starting the very first week back. Worth an actual conversation at home about what counts as excused before those two unexcused absences add up.
